Studio History

In the beginning
London Road Studios opened its doors in 2006. Founded by school friends Ben Coulter and Richard Maskell. The aim was to provide a premium standard service for recording and rehearsals in the Herts, Beds and Cambs areas. Originally a 3 room facility, London Road has expanded a lot since then! We now have 6 rooms (4 rehearsal, 2 control rooms and a main studio live room) In 2013 the studio underwent a complete overhaul including custom acoustic design and equipment upgrade.

Live Events, Club NME & Breaking Bands
Club NME Logo
London Road Studios has worked with Live Nation running Club NME in Hertfordshire, providing a platform for local talent to play with up and coming acts from NME Radar and on the (then) NME Shockwaves Tour. This ran along with our own promotions company "Bang On It" which organised many of the bigger live shows in the local area with popular touring bands (some of whom are now No. 1 selling acts) such as: Foals, Ed Sheeran, Example, The Rifles, Late Of The Pier, Hadouken, Iglu & Hartly, Good Shoes, Dogs and many more.

Meet The Team

Max Hopwood - Studio Manager / Engineer / Producer

Graduating with a distinction in recording arts and music technology from North Herts college, Max applied for an apprenticeship at London Road in 2010. A keen guitar player, Max's work ethic and tireless dedication to learning every aspect of recording (both old and new) has seen him create his own role as head engineer and studio manager in just 3 years. A genuine love and gift for creativity in music means he is comfortable with recording and producing all musical styles from acoustic to rock and metal through to electronic and Jazz.

Steph Carter

After 14 years of playing guitar, Steph pursued his passion for all things music at the redbrick University of Hull. During his time there, he studied music production, songwriting, performance and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Creative Music Technology in 2007. One year prior Steph joined the band Gallows. With Gallows, he wrote and released 3 critically acclaimed albums through major record labels, toured the world and played alongside some of the best, including; Rage Against The Machine, Rise Against, AFI, Cypress Hill, Ozzy Osbourne, tour managed the band, and even headlined various festival stages including Reading & Leeds, Sonisphere and Download. Throughout his 7-8 years with Gallows, Steph always made time to record, mix, and master music for his own band, as well as countless others spanning across all genres. His love for creating music drives his constant and dedicated pursuit of all types of industry work. Currently, Steph is a lecturer in music practise at West Herts College in Watford while writing and performing with his new band, The Ghost Riders in the Sky.

Lawrence Ames - Producer / Mix Engineer / Drum Tech

A multi-instrumentalist (drums, guitar, bass and keys) although Drums are his instrument of choice. Lawrence's technical proficiency means he is comfortable and adept with all modern recording techniques, including use of all the leading DAW's and sequencers (Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase etc.) He is also a superb drum and MIDI programmer with impeccable attention to detail mean the highest standard of mix and mastering results. Lawrence is also our in house drum tech.

Dale Chapman - Producer / Engineer / MIDI Programmer

With a long history of live performance, touring in a signed band, and a distinction in Popular Music and Music Technology from North Herts college, Dale has brought with him a wide mix of skills and experience to the London Road team. He has performed at the Download Festival, and alongside bands such as AC/DC, Aerosmith, Killswitch Engage, Motorhead, The Damned, InMe and countless others, as well as learning from the great and revered producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir). Despite his background in Heavy Rock & Metal, Dale turns his hand to any genre and excels. His work has ranged across Metal, Country & Western, Pop and Spoken Word, and each gets the same high level of attention to detail that ensures the highest quality end result that Dale has built his reputation on.

Richard Maskell - Studio Owner

Over the past 15 yrs, Richard has worked, trained and "lived" in almost every aspect of the music technology, recording arts and live events industries. A keen electronics enthusiast, he started recording from an early age with basic multi-track recorders, samplers and drum machines, playing bass guitar in a local indie rock band, then onto interning / assisting at various studios in the UK. Here learning fundamental analogue recording and microphone techniques first hand, using large format mixing consoles, reel to reel tape machines and classic outboard equipment. Graduating into the (now) norm of digital multi tracking, programming and plugins, during the same period also working as a successful live sound engineer and stage manager at many established venues. Setting up front of house PA, stage monitoring and lighting rigs. Using this skill set he started promoting live events under the official banner of Club NME and his own “Bang On It Promotions” group. Organising live shows at the now Infamous "Death Disco" In Nottinghill, London and bringing some of the bigger touring bands (and since then, No 1 charting and platinum selling artists) to Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, including: Example, Ed Sheeran, Late Of The Pier, Foals, Hadouken, The Rifles, Iglu and Hartly, The Holloways, Good Shoes, The Dogs, Bromheads Jackets and many more. The above experience’s meaning Richard is a true all-rounder. These days he enjoys producing new bands, photography and mixing / mastering.
